NEW WAVE FESTIVAL

The project involved designing a mobile app for a New Wave-themed music festival, with a focus on user experience, event scheduling, and visual identity. It included genre research, wireframing, usability testing, and UI design. The final deliverable was a high-fidelity interactive prototype in Figma, built around a cohesive Nostalgia Vintage concept.

BRIEF

The brief was to design a mobile app for a music festival, initially named the "Melbourne Music Festival." The goal was to create a cohesive and visually engaging interface that included key screens such as the landing page, ticketing, festival schedule, and shopping cart.

DESIGN PROCESS

The project commenced with detailed event planning, where I selected the New Wave music genre as the thematic focus of the festival. To establish a strong foundation, I conducted in-depth research into the genre’s origins, key artists, subgenres, and its cultural context. I then categorized performers into logical groupings, which informed the scheduling of acts across two stages over multiple days. This organisational framework was essential in defining the event structure and ensuring a balanced and engaging lineup for festival attendees.

Following the event planning phase, I conducted a competitive analysis to evaluate existing mobile applications designed for music festivals. This analysis focused on identifying core features, user interaction patterns, and the differentiating elements across platforms. Leveraging these insights, I developed low-fidelity UX prototypes to map out the app’s navigation and user flows. These prototypes were validated through task-based usability testing, where participants unfamiliar with the project were asked to complete specific actions within the prototype. Their feedback informed iterative refinements to enhance task clarity and overall user experience.

Illustrative wireflow

Once the wireflow was finalized, I transitioned into the UI design phase. I defined a detailed user persona to guide design decisions and ensure alignment with the intended audience. I also developed a cohesive visual concept titled Nostalgia Vintage, supported by a moodboard that captured the aesthetic tone of the application. To consolidate the visual direction, I created a comprehensive style tile, detailing typography usage, a structured colour palette (including primary, secondary, and semantic colours for success, warning, information, and error states), iconography, and button styles. This visual system ensured consistency and clarity across the app’s interface.
